Rock foundation of life

I work in many fields and am inspired by cross disciplinary possibilities.

My work always derives from my relationship with the land and I have recently come to recognise the importance of writing as an exploratory form for my ideas. Being located in a place is fundamental to my discovery and creativity. I recognise the importance of process as a form and this is where I make connections. I try to rid myself of the constraints where outcome is paramount and allow unconscious observations to emerge.

I investigate what we lose when distracted by viewing the world through technological lenses. How our focus shifts in constructed spaces, where text and imagery direct and distance us. How we become increasingly immersed in our own busy worlds, where what we once noticed and excited us as children gets lost and we feel disconnected.

Pebble

I hold a pebble, it locates me in the present and of my being, and I am moved by my deep response. The pebble grounds me, unlocking my imagination. Its solidity fits neatly in my palm; round, smooth, textured and warmed by me. I think of our planet, the soil, water, trees, oil, plastics and life.

Raising consciousness of human activity and impact is central to my practice. I work with how I and we live, engage and interact with our world. I turn to the land and notice how we ignore its fragility.  How we live without noticing, and seek ways to shift our perceptions, to become more conscious.

Inhabiting our rapidly changing world we urgently need to evolve to make a sustainable future. I work with others to expand possibilities, creating spaces where thinking and perceptions can shift. Seeking to sustain ourselves is integral to the work as this leads to activation. Recording and sharing of any practice is problematical. How do we share what has happened? How do we share an experience when the act of recording alters the form. The recording becomes a new entity and offers a different engagement and response. It is the evolving form or work that becomes significant in transformation.

The Image Gallery section is a snapshot of things I have seen, but I note that my selection has been influenced by time and place. When in locations I often notice that which is not recordable through photographic means. I draw to consider what is influential to my thinking and my writing becomes my main form as an exploration of what I see, hear, feel, think, notice. It is where I make my most insightful observations, obtuse connections and this feeds my imagination and excited my being.

The following sections are a selection of my work and are interconnected forming a complex web of perceptions and ideas.
